Reagan the Liberal, Obama the Conservative??

All of the attempts to claim Reagan as some kind of crypto-liberal, as I noted in National Review last week, are unpersuasive when they aren't mischievous. But it put me in a frame of mind to turn the tables. Right after the 2008 election, I gave a speech in Portland, Oregon, where, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, I argued that Obama was a stealth conservative candidate. I offer it for your amusement:
I'm wondering how long it is going to take the left to figure out that Obama is a stealth conservative candidate. He's not even in office yet, and already he has notched four major conservative victories. First, he has rid us of the Clintons.
Second, his coattails took Proposition 8, California's initiative to ban gay marriage initiative, over the finish line. Exit poll data show that it passed with very heavy support from African-American and Latino voters, who turned out in large numbers to vote for Obama. Without Obama on the ballot, Prop. 8 might have lost.
Third, he has shredded the public finance system for presidential elections. It's not coming back.
Fourth, his election happily diminishes race as a factor in American politics, which is long overdue.
A few more conservative victories like this and our friends over at MoveOn.org and the DailyKos are going to start scratching their heads and may even begin to suspect our plot.

Egypt protests: government to meet key opposition figures

The standoff between Egyptian anti-government protesters and their 82-year-old president has continued into its 12th day, with Cairo's central square still under occupation and Hosni Mubarak maintaining his refusal to stand down.
In an effort to break the deadlock, a group of prominent opposition figures said they would meet newly appointed vice-president Omar Suleiman later today to discuss the possibility of him assuming power for a transitional period.
The opening of any negotiations now between the government and opposition forces is being fiercely opposed by a wide swath of the pro-change movement, including the Muslim Brotherhood, former UN nuclear weapons chief Mohamed ElBaradei and many of the pro-change demonstrators on the ground, all of whom believe that talks should only begin after Mubarak resigns.
After a relatively peaceful night in Tahrir Square following a huge "day of departure" rally yesterday that once again brought hundreds of thousands on to the streets of downtown Cairo, opponents of the regime are beginning to cast around for new tactics in their struggle to unseat a president who is proving stubbornly resistant to all attempts at toppling him.

The parent organization of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is about to lose its longtime leader as it's embroiled in a bitter feud over the conference's inclusion of the gay conservative group GOProud. Two Keene allies confirmed a story first reported in World Net Daily that ACU chairman David Keene would not serve another term as head of the conservative political organization. According to them, Keene is expected take over as president of the National Rifle Association after leaving ACU.
Keene has been on the board of the NRA for years, and had been looking to this next step for at least a year. And the departure of Keene will change the picture for ACU's CPACs. A common problem that some conservatives have with CPAC is the involvement of Keene, whom they criticize, quietly, for trading off the ACU's credentials. A 2009 scandal over Keene offering to side with FedEx in a dispute with UPS -- many conservatives, it should be said, sided with UPS -- was emblematic of this. (Sarah Palin cited this as one reason she didn't attend the 2010 CPAC.) But Keene really had been looking at the NRA job for a while; it is pure luck that social conservatives have taken a stand against CPAC's libertarian bent this year, and can reap publicity when he leaves.

Hotel tax hike overcomes alliance of conservative, liberal delegates

The old dictum that politics makes for strange bedfellows was rarely clearer than in the vote among Howard County's state delegates approving the Ulman administration's bill boosting local hotel room taxes from 5 percent to 7 percent.

Allied in opposition were the delegation's most liberal member, Democratic Del. Elizabeth Bobo, and Republicans Dels. Gail H. Bates and Warren E. Miller, the two most conservative. Their reasons for opposing the measure were different, but led them to the same position. Though the local bill affects just Howard County, to become law the measure must be approved by the General Assembly.

In the final vote, Bobo said she opposed any restrictions on the use of the new revenue because of heavy demands on nonprofit and county social agencies that need more money to help people in crisis.

"I have no problem raising the hotel tax," she said, but she does object to using the money for tourism in a time of economic crisis. "Human services are unable to keep up," Bobo added.

Stelmach will step down as Alberta premier in September

EDMONTON - Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach has told Conservative party officials he will officially step down as leader in September.

In a letter to party members obtained by The Journal, Stelmach said he has informed the party’s executive committee that following the spring legislature sitting he will write to the PC president indicating he plans to step down in September.

If that’s the timeline, the party’s official leadership race won’t begin until the fall.

“I have asked the executive committee to appoint a leadership election committee to plan for a leadership vote in September of 2011,” Stelmach said it his

letter.

One source in the party said Stelmach’s timeline “isn’t being well received” by members who want him to speed up his exit to allow the party to choose a new leader as soon as possible. They worry that a seven-month exit will create a leadership vacuum and grind government work to a crawl.

Others say Stelmach should be free to set his own agenda.

“I think it’s very appropriate,” said Health Minister Gene Zwozdesky. “It gives us time to complete the spring session, complete the new budget and new legislation. It gives people over the summer time to plan. The premier has done a very good job under some very difficult circumstances and I think he has made a good decision regarding the timing.”

Battle River-Wainwright MLA Doug Griffiths said he thinks the Conservative caucus will be satisfied with the timing.

The democratic uprising in Egypt has brought into relief a gradual and little-noticed transformation in American politics. Over the past decade, ideological divisions on the role of democracy and human rights in American foreign policy have been scrambled.

In the meantime, President Obama has restored foreign policy realism to the White House, giving a liberal gloss to what had traditionally been a conservative disposition. This mildly liberal realism explains why Obama and his team have been so cautious in their dealings with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The most striking change is among conservatives. In the past, the default position of much of the American right was to support foreign strongmen friendly to the United States, on the theory that whoever succeeded them would be worse for their own people and disastrous for American interests.

The International Indian Film Academy will be hosting the three-day awards event June 23-25, culminating in the main awards show, open to the public at the Rogers Centre.
As in North America, India has a plethora of awards shows. But organizers say that, with the star power and high TV ratings the IIFA show attracts, it has become Bollywood’s Oscar equivalent.

Now in their 12th year, the IIFA awards have never been held in India – the IIFA claims that foreign host sites heighten the show’s glamour for the Bollywood press. They have previously been held in the U.K., South Africa, the Netherlands and China. North America was overdue.

“We consider this a landmark event, huge in proportion,” says Sabbas Joseph, director of IIFA. “It is the highest-rated, most-watched television [Indian] event … It has a viewership of 700 million to 800 million globally.”

‘Seedan’ is not mine: Dhanush

Despite claims being made repeatedly that ‘Seedan’ is an out and out Dhanush film, the actor has cleared the air by saying that he is only making a special appearance in the movie directed by Subramaniam Siva.

"I am playing an important role, but not playing the lead. Only 25-minutes footage," said Dhanush, in an apparent bid to avoid any disappointment to his fans who would throng theatres with an idea that their favourite star would come all through the movie.

At the same time, the actor is also recommending ‘Seedan’ to film-buffs. "It’s a simple and humble film. The climax, I promise you, will give goosebumps," according to Dhanush.

A remake of Malayalam hit ‘Nandanam’, ‘Seedan’ has newcomer Krishna and Ananya in lead roles. Dhanush is playing the role of a cook, who works in a palatial bungalow where Ananya is a maid.

Invites Unmarried Men to join the Indain Navy as Short Service Commissioned Officers in Executive Branch (General Service) Jul 2011 Course at Indian Naval Academy (INA) Ezhimala, Kerala. Candidates to fulfill conditions of nationality as laid down by the Government of India.
Eligibility Condition :-

Age. 19 ½ to 25 years, born between 02 Jul 1986 and 01 Jan 1992; both dates inclusive. Educational Qualifications. Any of the following:-
(a) Science Graduate with Physics & Mathematics with minimum 60% marks from a recognised University.
(b) BE/B Tech with minimum 60% marks in aggregate in any discipline from an institution recognised by AICTE.
(c) Science Graduates (Physics & Mathematics) from a recognised University holding NCC Naval Wing, Senior Division ‘C’ certificate.
(d) Graduate/Post Graduate in Operations Analysis and Operational Research/Quantitative Methods with minimum 75% marks from recognised University.
(e) Graduate/Post Graduate in Mathematics, with Probability or Statistics with minimum 75% marks from a recognised University. Note: Candidates who have not completed their Graduation (i.e. appearing candidates) need not apply, their application will not be accepted. Physical Standards.
(a) Height and Weight. Minimum height - 157 cms with correlated weight.
(b) Eye Sight. The minimum acceptable vision standard for distant vision 6/12, 6/12 correctable to 6/6, 6/6 with glasses. Should not be colour/night blind.
(c) There will be no relaxation in physical standards. Short Service Commission :
Short Service Commission is granted for a term of 10 years, extendable to 14 years, subject to service requirements and performance/willingness of the candidate. On completion of these tenures, officers are entitled for gratuity under the extant rules. Disciplined life, leadership qualities and professional skills imbibed during the service would stand as added advantages in acquiring second career post exit from the Navy. Selection Procedure :
a) The candidates will be issued call up for Services Selection Board (SSB) based on their performance in Degree Course. If a candidate possesses higher qualification with better percentage, his higher qualification will be considered for cut off. Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy) reserves the right to shortlist applications and to fix cut off percentage without assigning any reason. No communication will be entertained on this account. SSB interviews for short listed candidates will be scheduled at Bangalore/ Bhopal/ Coimbatore during Jan to May 2011.
b) SSB interview will be conducted in two Stages. Stage I test consisting of intelligence test, Picture Perception and Discussion test will be conducted on the second day of arrival at SSB. Candidates who fail to qualify in Stage I will be routed back on the same day. Stage II tests comprising of Psychological testing, Group testing and Interview will last for 04 days. Successful candidates will thereafter undergo Medical Examination (approx duration 03-05 days).
c) Candidates recommended by the SSBs and declared medically fit will be appointed for training in Order of all India Merit depending on the number of vacancies. Training :
The training is scheduled to commence in the month of Jul 2011. Pay Scale & Promotions.
The promotion from Sub Lieutenant to Commander is on time scale basis and thereafter on selection basis subject to fulfillment of requisite service condition. The Pay Scale and promotion criteria is as follows:-
